You could get up to Mirror Lake in a car with some clearance (Subaru), but beyond that I was glad to have 4 wheel drive and solid clearance. My other 4-wheel drive pages: Right goes to Taylor Park and Cottonwood Pass back to Buena Vista. My FunTreks manual has that section rated as "difficult", mostly due to the rocky section at the pass.
You'll cross a ledge road just before the pass. There was one section with some water runoff which was slick, but I never had to put it in 4wd. Rocky from the start, coming from St. Elmo. Not narrow at all.
How much potential damage do you want to do to your primary transportation? This is true for many of these routes. The road is pretty rough from the beginning and it is slow going. After pass the path ceases to be a road but a rocky area with no defined borders.
The trail is VERY bumpy, so just go slow.. other than that, I’d let my mom drive my jeep up this pass. St. Elmo can be reached by car.

Drove from St Elmo to TinCup today. Now, I would own a wagon in a heartbeat. if you'd like to see a video of the pass i have one here, but the second half is half of coney flats trail:
and some of the forest road offshoots would be good, I'm sure, and the Bachelor Loop near Creede should be doable.

Then road reappears and nice trip into lake and finally Tincup. The reviews made it seems like The decent down Tincup Pas toward Tincup was more technical, but we felt like we were more cautious on the way. Snow drifts start about 1.5 miles in.

Not narrow at all. I won't go into it further just look and you will understand. Looks bad, but fine if you hug the edge. After a brief stop in St Elmo, my wife and I ventured up the trail to the pass in the rain (and occasional hail) on 18 Jun. no locker
Airing down the tires helped a bit, but I certainly recommend a high clearance rig. Oh cool I havn't been to tin cup pass yet.

During the summer, it's a busy little place.
Main Street intersects with major forest road 765. Most of the trail is pretty easy but there are large rocks to watch out for.

r/subaru: Where OC is the standard and boxer engines rule the world. We haven't been exploring around Durango or Pagosa Springs recently enough to comment on those areas. But I would not go down the backside towards (ta && ta.queueForLoad ?
I will however, only own Subaru's.
I run a JKU with 4" lift/35" Nitto Trail Grapplers and we did fine. The road continues along the east side of Mirror Lake. He said it kinda depends on how aggressive you want to be with your (ta && ta.queueForLoad ?

The trail is VERY bumpy, so just go slow.. other than that, I’d let my mom drive my jeep up this pass. I love my Subaru, my Tribeca not so much. It was a great time and I’m still excited about the trip. Which hurts to say about a Subbie. A creek here feeds Mirror Lake.
We went from Tincup to St Elmo which is the “harder” route.
I was in a 2014 tundra and made ever obstacle without trouble.
I needed something larger, I didn't even know they made an SUV until they took me to one on the lot. This topic has been closed to new posts due to inactivity. The views are the most insane and the amazing camping opportunities that exist along this trail will have us back to visit, for sure. However.... keep in mind that an Outback is NOT an SUV. Pretty cool, and the flat 6 is a nice engine!
Very rocky, but fun. Right goes to Taylor Park and Cottonwood Pass back to Buena Vista. Especially down to the lake from the pass. Portions not for the faint of heart! You can also eat at Frenchie's Cafe. Trail conditions can change without notice. Came up from Taylor Reservoir and it’s non stop rocks all the way to St. Elmo. Princeton Photos,
