The Friends of James River Park are hosting a fun family event Friday night: the Firefly Foray at The Wetlands. The weather is not too hot, not too cold. The North Bank Trail is a proposed 18-mile non-motorized, multipurpose pathway located generally along the former Grand Trunk Western Railroad right of way from Spring Lake to Marne, MI.
The trail is dog-friendly, but you’ll need to keep your furry friends on a leash – especially if you want to see wildlife.
Why we love it: The trail is easy enough for toddlers – and more than engaging enough for the rest of the family. The North Bank will connect the east end of Lakeside Trail in the Village of Spring Lake to the southeast end of the existing Musketawa Trail, otherwise known as the Fred Meijer Pioneer Trail.

For at least half a mile, you’ll have incredible view of the park to your left and the Kanawha Canal on your right. Spring is one of my favorite times in Richmond. There are many volunteers who work with the City of Richmond Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities, the James River Park System, Richmond Police Department and neighborhood watch programs to maintain the trails and keep them safe -- especially Richmond MORE, the trail-building group responsible for so many miles of Richmond's trail system. However, if you don’t mind passing friendly faces along the way, then you’re going to love what you find along this riverside trail. When she's not exploring Richmond for the latest and greatest resources, offerings, and activities, she can be found daydreaming on travel blogs, drinking too much coffee, and running kids to endless activities.
While the trail can get crowded, it’s worth it. Dozens of outdoor sports enthusiasts have already checked it out. If you’d like to be closer to the access point for Texas Beach, try parking at 1941 Texas Avenue, which offers parking for about 30 cars.
