I struggled a lot with the 1000 ft elevation gain back to Half Moon Pass, but I am relatively new to 14er hikes. so many colors all around!!! Planning to stay at halfmoon campground the night before. In heavy snow years that opening may be delayed due to snow conditions. Ask fellow travellers and attraction managers your top questions. Angelica is the couloir most visible to hikers on the standard route and finishes 300 feet below the summit. This is a 12.4 mile out-and-back hike with 5800 cumulative feet of elevation gain that takes about 6-8 hours to complete. You can walk or mountain bike the road during the elk closure. Thanks!- Mandatory self-issuing (free) permits required for overnight use only, it used to be for all visitors.- You are NOT allowed to camp in Notch Mountain Shelter any longer. The Tigiwon road is closed in the winter, but accessibly by snowmobile. There was only a little dusting of snow near the top, but no need for any extra traction. We arrived at trailhead (10,320’) at about noon on August 15, 2012, parked and backpacked up 1400’ in 1.5 miles to Half Moon Pass and then descended 1000’ to East Cross Creek where we camped. I would strongly recommend starting early and managing your pace moreso than other summit hikes. Mount of the Holy Cross is a shy peak, despite being only about 15 miles from Vail, it is difficult to see from roads. With an elevation profile that looks like an electrocardiogram and a 5,600-foot total elevation gain over the 12-mile hike, climbing the 14,005-foot Mount of the Holy Cross is not for the faint of heart. The mountain was proclaimed “Holy Cross National Monument” by Herbert Hoover on May 11, 1929. There is also an annual closure to all motorized vehicles for Elk Calving from May 1 to June 20. Relatively secluded, great opportunities to see wildlife (deer, rock ptarmigans, birds, etc), and expansive views from the summit. Helmet, ice axe and crampons recommended. I think I marked where the Cross is in red. Planning to take this trail on Monday (10/12).
